About us

Gaudeamus is a chamber choir of about 24 voices based in Leigh on Sea, Essex. Founded in 1988 and conducted by its present musical director, Ruth Brown, since 1999, Gaudeamus is increasingly renowned for the quality and variety of its singing, of music from the middle ages to the present day.

We give between five and seven concerts a year, mostly in South-East Essex but also at venues across the county, including Basildon, Canvey Island, Brentwood, Copford, Coggeshall and Lexden in the Colchester area, Finchingfield and at Ingatestone Hall. We have also undertaken foreign concert tours, to Washington DC, Prague, Rome and Venice.

The choir had crisp, incisive diction, produced a range of vocal colour, and their faithful attention to dynamic markings was impressive. You would need to go quite a long way to hear finer a capella singing in Essex.
